Newsgroups are bulletin board type discussion areas that allow people to view messages on a particular subject and respond to these messages, thereby adding to the discussion or debate. Each newsgroup has a different name which helps to identify what it is set up for. For example, uk.rec.scouting is a UK recreational group to do with Scouting.
Many Scouting newsgroups exist on Usenet news servers for different nationality groups, for international matters, for badge trading, and for discussing controversial issues. Some of these newsgroups are listed and described below. Usenet is the name of the system that joins up all of the newsgroup servers around the world using the internet.
To access any of the following newsgroups you can use your normal web browsing programme, although you will probably find that a dedicated newsreading program will be easier to use and contain more or better features. If your internet provider does not carry a particular newsgroup that you would like to access then just drop a line to the support department with a polite request; most internet service providers will be willing to add a newsgroup for you.
